Utility Excavations – Categories 3 to 5

Location

This is a classroom course in one of our academies facilitating face to face interactive learning.

Note: The minimum age of attendance for this course is 16 years old, however delegates who are under the age of 18 must bring a completed parental consent form to the first day of the training course.

Entry Requirements

A health screening questionnaire is an essential element of the scheme and must be completed by all candidates prior to the training and assessment.

The minimum entry is a good understanding of spoken and written English.

This course is suitable for all levels.

Duration & Timings

This is a two-day course. Delegates are required to complete the full day (7.5 hours) to be eligible for certification.

Course times: Usually 8.45am start. Course times will be confirmed in the joining instructions once the course has been booked.

The Utility Excavations scheme is tailored for those involved in excavation work within the energy and utilities industries. Typically, the safety training focuses on Temporary Works at locations such as highways, fields, and construction sites, covering both excavator operator training and excavation supervisor training.

This scheme includes training and assessments for various support systems in excavation. Category 3 focuses on the installation, inspection, and removal of timber support systems, essential for those working with timber excavation supports. Category 4 covers the same for steel support systems, providing the necessary skills for handling steel excavation supports. Lastly, Category 5 is dedicated to proprietary support systems, ensuring that individuals are proficient in installing, inspecting, and removing these specialized excavation supports.

By the end of the course, delegates will be able to demonstrate the following skills and knowledge: :

  • Checking that a safe system of work exists
  • Ensuring a Risk Assessment has been completed at the planning stage
  • Checking that if required, a Permit to Work is in place
  • Checking that if required, a lift plan is in place
  • Interpret design plans and work instructions and effectively communicate with colleagues on site
  • Identify the dangers, hazards and risks associated with excavations and the installation or removal of support systems

This scheme includes training and assessment from the three categories. Delegates taking the course will be able delegates to understand all of the required topics below by the end of the course:

  • Identify the dangers and hazards associated with working in excavations
  • Differentiate between soil types and conditions
  • Recognise suitable ground retention systems
  • Carry out risk assessments unique to excavations
  • Recognise the hazards, and implement control measures for those hazards
  • Be able to safely install, inspect, and remove timber, steel and proprietary shoring equipment with practical experience in doing so
  • Interpret specific temporary works designs
  • EU Skills – EUSR SMART card with photo id, qualification stated on back of card (additional cost)
  • EU Skills – EUSR Virtual Registration is available upon request in lieu of plastic SMART card

Managers, supervisors, safety professionals and/or operatives who are required to oversee or carry out work in or around excavations. If you physically install, inspect or remove shoring systems and haven’t had any formal training, this course is essential to minimise risk to yourself and those around you.

Additional Attendee Information

  • Please inform us if you have any serious health issues, physical problems or are taking any medication which may create difficulties in undertaking elements of this training course
  • You will need a suitably sized quiet room where they can carry out the course without interruptions
  • You will need to provide recent Photo identification
  • The examination will be carried out using an online examination tool using XAMS and will be subject to invigilation.
  • We recommend using Google Chrome as the XAMS platform is not compatible with Internet Explorer. The e-learning cannot be completed on a mobile phone.
  • Your first re-sit is auto generated and can be taken on the same day. However, you may need to re-take one or more of the e-Learning modules.
  • After you have completed the e-assessment you will be contacted for invigilation purposes
  • All prices shown are subject to VAT
  • This course is self-paced, allowing you to tailor your learning to fit your schedule and needs.
  • You will complete an induction prior to starting the course
