Utility Excavations – Category 1 and 2

Location

This is a classroom course in one of our academies facilitating face to face interactive learning.

Note: The minimum age of attendance for this course is 16 years old, however delegates who are under the age of 18 must bring a completed parental consent form to the first day of the training course.

Entry Requirements

A health screening questionnaire is an essential element of the scheme and must be completed by all candidates prior to the training and assessment.

The minimum entry is a good understanding of spoken and written English.

This course is suitable for all levels.

Duration & Timings

This is a one-day course. Delegates are required to complete the full day (7.5 hours) to be eligible for certification.

Course times: Usually 8.45am start. Course times will be confirmed in the joining instructions once the course has been booked.

Utility Excavations is a scheme designed for individuals working in and around excavations in the energy and utilities sectors. Generally, the excavation safety training is for Temporary Works on sites like highways, fields and construction sites, for excavator operator training and excavation supervisor training.

Training includes (CAT 1) Locate Utility Services (HSG47) which covers the minimum training and assessment required for those working to safely detect utility services using recognised and approved detection methods and (CAT 2 Implement Safe (Digging) Excavating Practices which  covers the minimum training and assessment required for those working to safely excavate and maintain holes and trenches using both hand tools and hand-held power tools.

By the end of the course, delegates will be able to demonstrate the following skills and knowledge: :

  • Interpret utility drawings and line search documents
  • Demonstrate usage of cable location devices (Cat & Genny) in order to locate utility services
  • Identify the dangers and hazards associated with carrying out ground survey detection
  • Accept the limitations of underground utility detection equipment and drawings
  • Grasp the true costs of utility ‘strikes’ to contractors, stakeholders and wider society
  • Distinguish between good and bad practices via increased education in this specialist area
  • Identify ground/soil types and changeable conditions faced on-site
  • Carry out or interpret Risk Assessment and Permits to Work
  • Implement safe digging practices through hand digging techniques

This scheme includes training and assessment from the two categories. Delegates taking the course will be able delegates to understand all of the required topics below by the end of the course:

Underground legislation & guidance pertaining to underground services, excavation, construction & groundworks. Examples are:

  • HSG47, HSWA 1974, HSG150, CDM 2015
  • Work at Height Regs 2015
  • PUWER 1998
  • Confined Spaces Regulations 1997
  • EUSMUNC06, EUSMUNC07, COSVR370 and EUSEPUS044
  • EU Skills – EUSR SMART card with photo id, qualification stated on back of card (additional cost)
  • EU Skills – EUSR Virtual Registration is available upon request in lieu of plastic SMART card

Managers, supervisors, safety professionals and/or operatives who are required to oversee and/or carry out work employing underground services detection devices.

Additional Attendee Information

  • Please inform us if you have any serious health issues, physical problems or are taking any medication which may create difficulties in undertaking elements of this training course
  • You will need a suitably sized quiet room where they can carry out the course without interruptions
  • You will need to provide recent Photo identification
  • The examination will be carried out using an online examination tool using XAMS and will be subject to invigilation.
  • We recommend using Google Chrome as the XAMS platform is not compatible with Internet Explorer. The e-learning cannot be completed on a mobile phone.
  • Your first re-sit is auto generated and can be taken on the same day. However, you may need to re-take one or more of the e-Learning modules.
  • After you have completed the e-assessment you will be contacted for invigilation purposes
  • All prices shown are subject to VAT
  • This course is self-paced, allowing you to tailor your learning to fit your schedule and needs.
  • You will complete an induction prior to starting the course
